Kiefer Ravena played one of his best games of the season as he led the Ateneo Blue Eaglets to an 80-73 stopping of the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers in Game 1 of the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines Junior Basketball finals last Saturday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena.

The five-foot-seven Ravena, the son of a retired PBA star, delivered 15 points of his 33 gamehigh points  during a big fourth quarter run which brough the Blue Eaglets a game closer to their 16th high school crown since they joined the league in 1978.

Ravena, who also also had nine rebounds, made his move after the Loyola cagers took a 56-49 third quarter spread.

He fired one of his two treys with 9:15 left to give the Blue Eaglets one of their biggest edge, and then went for a jumper and drive two minutes later during a 9-3 run which gave them a 65-52 advantage with 6:30 left.

Slotman Al Bugarin, along with  teammate Paulo Pe, kept Junior Archer center Arnold Van Opstal at bay, and delivered 10 points and 14 rebounds.

“He is a good boy. He works hard. So he just plays his best. But, he could not do this alone.  So his teammates were setting him up. He was given screens, that’s why he was able to make those baskets. This team is not Kiefer’s team. It’s Ateneo,” said Blue Eaglets coach Jamike Jarin.

Ravena’s 33-point-output was one of his highest after making 38 points and 16 rebounds in Ateneo’s game against the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws three weeks ago.

The Blue Eaglets broke away from a 43-all deadlock in the third period, with Luis Sinco touching off a 9-0 run with a triple and a drive past Luis de la Paz.

Their breakaway allowed the Blue Eaglets to enjoy a 52-43 spread with 3:07 to go.

Nico Elorde played with almost no relief for 39 minutes and dished out 18 points and rebounds, while Gwynne Capacio eked out 15 points and 12 rebounds.

But he was limited to in the third as Ateneo’s defense clamped down on him in the start of the second half.

La Salle Zobel coach Boris Aldeguer vows to that his team will bounce back in Game 2 this Tuesday.

“We can’t just win games with only five players on the floor. The other guys will have to step up,” said Aldeguer.
